Fast and Furious fans were sent into meltdown after the trailer for Fast 9 finally dropped on Friday. The teaser put family at the forefront, as Vin Diesel, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris and Michelle Rodriguez got back to their racing roots for the next instalment, alongside newcomer John Cena.

And, in between all the drama, there was also a subtle nod to the late Paul Walker – who played Brian O’Conner in the franchise before his tr trágic deáth in 2013.

The trailer begins with an instrumental version of Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth’s tribute song See You Again, as Dominic (Vin) and Letty (Michelle) played with Dom’s son, Brian. Director Justin Lin has opened up about the song, stressing the importance of their ‘family’ bond. ‘It was important because as the Fast family we take a lot of pride in the journey,’ he began.

‘In front of the camera you’re seeing our characters age, and behind the camera we’re all growing together, we started families, all of our kids are growing up together. ‘And so I really thought it was important to acknowledge that with Dom, Letty, and little Brian,’ he added to Entertainment Weekly. ‘And to be able to acknowledge that in a big action franchise, I thought it was important to connect that to other pieces of the family.’ It was previously suggested that Paul’s character could be making a surprise return to the franchise, six years after his deáth.

The actor passed away in a car crash on 30 November, 2013, aged 40, with brothers Cody and Caleb Walker stepping in to film his final scenes for Furious 7. But it was claimed Brian was making a return to the franchise, as LadBible reported that sources close to the casting department were looking for a double of the late star. ‘Just got a new casting grid for something and with it some big news that are sure to be controversial,’ Twitter user Daniel Richtman shared with his 78.5k followers. ‘Not sure how I feel about it myself but we’ll see.’

‘They are bringing back Paul Walker’s character, Brian, to FF9,’ he later added. Cody previously opened up about potentially returning as Paul, after he filmed scenes for Furious 7. Speaking to Metro.co.uk, he left the door open for a comeback, telling us: ‘You know there’s a lot of things that are said about the franchise, there’s a lot of rumours going around.

‘I think anything is possible and we’ll see what the future has in store. ‘There are a lot of things that are said out there,’ he added. ‘There’s a rumour that the franchise might go to outer space next, so you never know… Nothing is off the table, never say never.’
